Ikem-Ivite is the first Autonomous Community recognized by the State and federal Government in Nando, Anambra State, Nigeria while Nando is a town in Anambra East Local Government Area.
The Iwaji (new yam) festival which took place at H.R.M Igwe Uyaemenam Bernard Okafor’s palace in Ikem-Ivite Nando on the 13 September 2020 was indeed a successful one. It was the best of it’s kind as the people of Ikem-Ivite in Anambra East Local Government Area celebrated their new yam festival, thanking God for a fruitful harvest.
The event started with opening prayers from the parish priest Rev. Father Anslem Chidiume, committing the New yam festival into God’s hand.
Ikem-Ivite, Nando is located at the Eastern part of Nigeria and well known for their farming skills and in modern day cognitive pharmaceutical skills. It was time in the year for them to harvest their yams and as all may know, it’s a custom and tradition in Igbo land to celebrate their new yam festival first before eating yam for the year which should be carried out by the Igwe (king).
The celebration attracted the presence of well known public figures and personalities such as:
- Special guest of Honour: His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano
- Guest of Honour: Hon. Pharm. Obinna Chris Emeneke (Ijele Omambala).
- Chief Host: HRH Prince Uche Okafor (Regent Eze-Ezu Ikem).
- Host: Prof. Charles Nwadigwe (PG Ikem-Ivite, Nando).
- Host: Anthony Mmaduka Emelife (Chairman Dagama Gen.)

The event was filled with people who came from far and wide to witness the great festival and it was properly secured and guarded which made the people feel safe.
The presence of Igba Ndi Eze was well Recognized as they played some interesting music. It was a great and memorable festival as the people of Ikem-Ivite, Nando show cased their masquerades and their traditional dancers swept the people off their feet with their amazing dancing moves.
The people of Ikem-Ivite, Nando enjoyed every bit of the celebration and prayed that next year Iwaji (new yam) festival be better than that of this year.
