Defence Sector critical for National Development – Adeleke

A member of the Senate Defence Committee ,Senator Ademola Adeleke has described the defence Sector as critical and pivotal for national development. Speaking after an oversight visit by the Defence Committee to the Defence Intelligence Agency in Abuja on Wednesday,Adeleke affirmed that “a nation that cannot defend herself and secure her territorial integrity cannot successfully execute and sustain national development projects and programme. “The Nigerian military and the entire defence and security apparatus are strategic assets which must be fully supported in the discharge of their national mandate. The greatness of any nation is both a function of national security and well being of her citizens. This is why adequate funding of the sector is a priority in many societies. “For us in the National Assembly, supporting the defence sector is beyond partisan thinking. It is a national duty for all patriots. So our visit to the agency is part of that task of ensuring that budgtary allocations and needs of the sector are adequately attended to”,he said. While lauding the contributions of the military to nation building,Adeleke urged leaders of the sector to continue to sustain national unity in their operations and activities, adding that “the nerve centre of national unity is our military and security sector. “Defence and security personnel have contributed immensely to keeping Nigeria one. They are sacrificing on daily basis to keep all of us safe.Hence ,the Senate to which I belong will continue to do everything possible to ensure adequate budgetary allocations to the sector”,Senator Adeleke concluded.

Damen eyes increased fishing operation

Damen Shipyard has concluded plans to raise commercial fishing operations in Africa as the shipyard last week announced a new vessel leasing fund for the African continent. A statement obtained by Vanguard Maritime Reportindicated that details of the Damen Africa Ship Leasing Fund was unfolded at the Damen Fishing Seminar last weekend in Cape Town, South Africa. Damen, an international shipyard group and major supplier of wide range of vessels to Africa, has reportedly delivered more than 1,200 vessels to customers in Africa over the past three years. Damen Finance Manager, Francesco Verscheuren, a specialist in fishing in Africa, said, “The new fund is particularly interesting for smaller, private fishing vessels owners. We are using our years of experience to support them with their vessel financing based on leasing agreement.” Tailored as a hire-purchase agreement and designed to meet the specific needs of prospective customers, Verschuren said that each customer will begin by chartering the vessel for a certain number of years, while at the same time repaying the loan and the applicable interest. They then have the option of outright purchase of the vessel during the tenor of the agreement and obligation, or after paying up the net cost within the agreement time frame. Instructively, the Damen Africa Ship Leasing fund gives ship owners an option to own and operate vessels when they don’t necessarily have the means to make a large down payment on a vessel in a traditional financing arrangement with registered dealer banks, or when local financing solutions are not available. “By making use of Africa Fund, customers can own a state-of-the-art Damen vessel in just a few years and tap into new business opportunities straightaway. Financing a new vessel from the fund has the advantage of being both very flexible and each lease agreement is custom-made to the ship owner’s requirements”, Verschuren said. The Damen Africa Ship Leasing which was established in May 2018 is reported to have already assisted owners in Nigeria and Angola,[…]

Photo by Abayomi Adeshida They further stated that rather than issuing threat of sanction for members who have taken the option of going to court to seek readdress, over perceived injustice done to them, the NWC should look inward and reinvent itself, noting that; “you cannot beat a child and stop him from crying .” They tasked the NWC to apply diplomacy in resolving the crisis in the party at all levels, rather than resorting to act of intimidation and blackmail, adding that dictatorship is an aberration in democracy and the only way to stop dictatorship is through the court of law. According to them: “the NWC as presently constituted, with particular reference to the situation in Delta State APC chapter, lacks the moral right to asked party members not to continue in court wereas the first official assignment of the NWC led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was to rush to court to obtain a “continuous consent judgment” against perceived ‘Oyegun state executives’ in Delta without using nor exhausting internal party mechanism. 12m Nigerians venture into farming in two years, says Buhari

The agriculture sector has significantly reduced the rate of employment in the country as over 12 million Nigerians have ventured into rice production in the last two years. President Muhammadu Buhari disclosed this at the 4th Nigeria Rice Investment Forum, Effective Linkage of Actor and Effort in the Value Chain for Sustained Self-Sufficiency in Rice Production, on Wednesday in Abuja. The president, who was represented by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said it was important to encourage more people into farming in order to attain self-sufficiency in rice production. “The impact of our interventions in rice sector has resulted into job creation, increase in wealth, while reducing migration from rural to urban areas. “As of July this year, the number of farmers has increased by 12 million. “The Rice Farmers Association (RIFAN) has five million members. The number of people working in the rice mills, small or big is over 1.7 million. “These include harvesters, loaders, off loaders, transporters, distributors and markets. “Unemployment is one of our biggest challenges in the country. “We want to make Nigeria self-sufficient in rice production and the fact that we are currently the largest producer of rice in Africa, followed by Mali is good news,” he said. “We have cut down rice importation by 90 per cent in the last three years and our milled rice is available in every store and supermarket in the country,” he said. Buhari also refuted a report credited to the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that alleged that Nigeria imported three million metric tonnes of rice in 2018. He reiterated his administration’s commitment toward improving the agriculture sector and creating job opportunities for the unemployed persons in the country. However, the Minister of Agriculture in his keynote address, said that plans were underway to privatise the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), adding that 40 per cent of the shares would go to farmers. Ogbeh said that this would address the challenges faced by[…]

The information is in the President Buhari and Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo’s Next Level Campaign Guide for 2019. According to the guide, the efforts of government in the past few years enabled internet access and promoted local content, especially among Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government. It stated that “following the Vice President’s visit to Silicon Valley, U.S., where he visited the headquarters of some leading global technology companies, he met Google officials. “ He met with Google Chief Executive Officer, Sundar Pichai, and its top executives in July and the global tech company now provides free Wi-fi access in several public places in Nigeria. “ This initiative will bridge societal gaps by providing free internet access to some of the poorest in the society. It will grant access to information, tools of education, improved business and job opportunities and expansion for many Nigerians.” It further said that the free internet access was in line with the administration’s plan to improve the country’s technology sector and leverage on the gains that a data-driven digital economy could offer. It added that Information Communication Technology (ICT) was the new oil, adding that oil revenues were no longer sustainable. The guide indicated that the first free Wi-fi sites were rolled out in some parts of Lagos State. Corroborating President Buhari’s achievements, Mrs Titi Akinsomi, Google Nigeria Public Policy Lead, said “Google is highly committed to granting internet access to Nigerians. We are here to develop to make the promise of the digital economy a reality in Nigeria.” Akinsomi recognised that internet access was like a venture and the company was targeting 200 free Wi-Fi sites in the country in the next one year.
