Plateau Assembly speaker escapes impeachment

Spread the gist

Plateau State House of Assembly Speaker Peter Azi has escaped impeachment by fellow lawmakers for attempting to prolong the tenure of transition committee chairmen in the 17 local government councils of the state slated to expire on Thursday, June 28. This is following the truncated election of chairmen and councillors by the state Governor Simon Lalong barely a month after he took over power in 2015. Since then, the state government had been appointing caretaker committees periodically to oversee the affairs of the local governments. Disagreement reportedly started on the floor of the House on Thursday when Azi wanted the lawmakers to go on recess without discussing the tenure of the transition committees whose tenure expired same day. But a lawmaker representing Mikang constituency, Na’anlong Daniel moved a motion of urgency on the tenure of the transition of chairmen that had just expired. This was supported by Simon Kudu of Irigwe/Rukuba constituency. The debate was reportedly uncomfortable for some members who were not in support of the development, as they commenced impeachment process of collecting signatures against the speaker before the lawmakers resolved to settle the matter. After much deliberation, 18 out of the 24 members of the House voted to end the tenure of the transition committee chairmen in the state. The House will further debate on having elected executives for the local governments. The failed impeachment process has resulted in the dismissal of chairmen and councillors at the 17 local government councils. However, reports suggest that the action of the majority of the lawmakers is not connected with principal officers of the House to extend committee chairmen’s tenure in compliance to wish of the state government.

Otedola Bridge: What Ali Baba said about fatal tanker explosion

Spread the gist

Veteran comedian, Alleluya Akpobome, better known as Ali Baba, has reacted to the tanker fire at popular Otedola Bridge in Lagos, which claimed many lives. In a sober post on his Instagram page, Ali Baba highlighted the inefficiencies and weaknesses of the Nigerian society, which caused the fatal oil tanker explosion. He noted that nothing will change those negatives to positives unless citizens and government work together. The ace comedian wrote: “In organized societies, where traffic is a major issue, tankers and heavy duty vehicles move at night or at specified times. “In developed climes, MOT agencies… are as serious as the police force. In some other climes, that have deep shores like we do, only one port can not be used for discharge of staples like fuel, and even then, fuel and transportation of inflammable contents are done in controlled methods. “We are a lawless country. If government tries to organize these same tankers now, they will go on strike, shut down the economy and day to day running, and we will let them continue. Same thing with teachers… try to get them to go get retrained and be Twitter qualified to teach, they will strike and we are back to status quo. “We do not punish people who even chop monies meant for projects. Projects that have been captured in the budget and monies released. The same people who chop the monies will now be in the ruling party and to prosecute them becomes a No No. And as nothing is done to them another person will do it. “Just imagine. Nigerians died today because of avoidable precautions and failure to create policies and laws that have consequences that could have deterred that tanker from being on that road. “But no, lawmakers don’t care. The Executives ‘no send’ and the JUDICIARY is not jailing them. Bet me, more tankers will fall. Nothing will be done. Nothing.”

Speaking at post match conference shortly after his team beat Nigeria 2-1 at St. Petersburg Stadium on Tuesday, Messi who agreed that the match was balanced praised the Eagles for their gallant showing. It was a very balanced game, we were able to control the first half, we had more possession, they tried to create chances around after the first goal. Argentina vs Croatia ‘ ‘We thought the second half would be similar but they scored a penalty and that made things more difficult, we got nervous, we had pressure as time goes faster,’’ he said. Messi, who became the third Argentine player to score in three World Cups, following Diego Maradona and Gabriel Batistuta accepted that his side had to battle hard against Nigeria. He, however, said that they were aware of the threat posed by France their next opponent, saying: ‘‘We know France is a good side and we will find solution to their antics,’’ he said

Judge questions competence of Nigerian lawyer handling trial of Chinese crime suspects

Spread the gist

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered the Director of Legal Services, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), to appear before it in connection with the trial of two Chinese nationals, charged with importing substandard tyres into the country. The judge, Mojisola Olatoregun, handed down the order following a ruling that the prosecution of the defendants, arraigned on allegations of importation of fake tyres into the country, was incompetent. The accused — Tao Shen, 36, and Jing Yau, 22 — were charged alongside a Nigerian, Chinedu Madubuike, and two companies, Sino Nigeria Import and Export Ltd, and Nedeca International Ltd. At the resumed trial of the case on Wednesday, Babatunde Alajogun, appeared for the prosecution and began the examination-in-chief of the prosecutions’ third witness (PW3). The PW3, Sylvester Aigbe, told the court that he was the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) who recovered the substandard tyres and iron rods from the defendants’ warehouse. According to Mr Aigbe, the tyres which came in different sizes were tucked in bigger ones and in batches. Mr Alajogun sought to tender the tyres and the iron rod as exhibits, but when the court asked for the number of tyres recovered, he and the witness became embroiled in an argument. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the argument went on for about three minutes before the court interjected and delivered a short ruling. “It is obvious you are not capable of prosecuting this case, you are either incompetent or corrupt. “How can a prosecutor not (have) seen the exhibit in his case or met the witness before the case is called. “The Director of Legal Services of your organisation must appear before this court before this case can proceed,” Mr Olatoregun ruled. Consequently, she adjourned the case until September 26 for continuation of trial. The accused were alleged to have committed the offences sometime in February by conspiring to import tyres that did not meet the relevant Nigerian standards. They were also alleged[…]
