Free Education: Nasarawa govt. warns principals against extorting students

The Nasarawa State Government on Monday warned principals of public secondary schools against extorting their students, stressing that education in the state is free. Mr. Abubakar Agwai, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia. According to Agwai, the ministry had received reports that some principals were still collecting unauthorised fees from their students under the guise of Parents and Teachers’ Association levy. “We are running a free education policy in the state from primary to secondary schools and nobody is expected to hide under any excuse and extort the unsuspecting students. “The ministry is committed to ensuring the success of the free education policy and cannot fold its hands to allow some unpatriotic elements sabotage the government efforts,” the permanent secretary added. He explained that the ministry was investigating some reported cases of extortion for appropriate sanctions. Agwai warned civil servants in the habit of flouting government directives to stop or face severe sanctions. The permanent secretary urged parents, guardians and students to report any principal or teacher that asked them for money. EFCC arrests 9 internet fraudsters in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has arrested nine Internet fraudsters popularly known as Yahoo-Yahoo boys, in Abuja. The suspects were arrested by the Advance Fee Fraud Section of the Commission on November 30, 2018 through an intelligence report received on the fraudulent activities of the suspected fraudsters residing somewhere along Airport Road, as they were obviously living above their means. Operatives of the EFCC had carried out surveillance for days on the activities of the fraudsters before they swooped in on them. The suspects are: Edwin Ogbomwan, Okouromi Franklin, Oseji Collins, Collins Onyekwuluje, Anyanechi Ekene, Tony Oviasuyi, Chidi Emeshili, Osaigbovo Aiseos and Osaigbovo Ikponmnosa. The suspects had turned their residence into a safe haven for fraudulent activities using it as a place of abode and an operational office with computers, laptops, phones, modems, sim cards and many other fraudulent tools to fleece unsuspecting Nigerians and foreigners of their hard earned money and valuables. The suspects had created a phoney identity of ‘Thomas Jerry Star and John Ben’, which they effectively deployed in their deceptive deals. The suspects aged between 19 and 26 years, were arrested with two GLK Mercedes Benz, One Toyota Camry, Lexus Jeep and other valuables worth millions of Naira, which they acquired through the proceeds of their ignoble trade. 2019: Nigeria is deeply in great dilemma – Onaiyekan

ABUJA – Ahead of the 2019 elections, Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has said Nigeria is deeply in great dilemma over who to vote as president in the choice between the two leading presidential candidates, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and incumbent Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC. Onaiyekan said this over the weekend while speaking on the topic: “The Church in Politics: Towards the election year 2019” at an event organized by Catholic Action – Nigeria in Abuja. The Archbishop said there was no reason to expect either of both candidates to perform wonders if elected having seen them in the past operate below par at the highest levels of government. Addressing the lay faithful, he said: “Our dear country is deeply in a great dilemma as we move towards the 2019 election. It would appear that we are faced with the horrible tragedy of a choice between two well-known undesirable candidates. This is not only because both of them are Muslims but because we have seen both and we have no reason to be enthusiastic that they will do wonders.” Onaiyekan further lamented that whereas there are over 90 political parties in the country, there seemed to be no viable alternative to the two mega parties. “Where is the alternative? It is a pity that they cannot come together to form a viable alternative. In my opinion, this is mainly because of selfishness. Everybody wants to be President and wield power. No one wants to step down and join hands with others of like minds. We need to pray that there will be a way forward. We have to seriously tackle the evil of selfishness,” he said. The Archbishop however maintained that the seeming absence of a viable alternative should not be an excuse for Nigerians to lose interest in the coming elections. “If we do lose interest, others are busy working. All that it takes for evil to thrive is[…]

Otedola tells court Farouk Lawan demanded $500,000 bribe

Founder of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, Femi Otedola, said, Wednesday, that a former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, demanded $500,000 bribe from him. Lawan was former Chairman of the House of Representatives commi-ttee that probed the multi-billion naira fuel subsidy fraud by the seventh Assembly. The former lawmaker is accused of receiving money from Otedola to remove Zenon from the list of oil companies allegedly involved in the fuel subsidy fraud. He was charged by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation for allegedly receiving bribe. During the hearing of the case at a Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court in Abuja yesterday, Adegboyega Awomolo, counsel to the Federal Government, played the tape showing Lawan receiving the said sum. While giving his testimony, Otedola said Lawan removed Zenon from the list of indicted oil companies after he collected the money, adding that $2.5 million was the balance he was expected to pay the ex-lawmaker. According to Otedola, “I could not have put him under pressure because Zenon Oil was not involved in the theft of subsidy funds. “If he did not demand (for money), why will he collect the $500,000 and was expecting $2.5 million? He did mention to me that the $3 million was going to be shared by himself and other officers of the house. “I did not offer any $3 million. I was one of the biggest players in the business and I reported the matter when I found out about the scam. He did mention to me that several companies involved were paying and I reported to the DSS.” After Awomolo finished quizzing Otedola, L . Azuka, a lawyer from the chambers of Mike Ozekhome, counsel to Lawan, asked the court for an adjournment. Trial judge, Angela Otaluka, adjourned the matter till January 28, 2019.

PDP denies destruction of APC billboards in Enugu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has denied reports that the party was responsible for the destruction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) billboards in the state. Enugu State Leaders and Stakeholders forum had decried what it called the intolerance of the Enugu State government, towards the main opposition party in the state, the APC saying that the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, personally ordered that no billboards campaigning for President Buhari and the APC governorship candidate in Enugu State, Senator Ayogu Eze, be allowed to stand anywhere in the state, despite having paid the necessary levies for such. But the PDP in a statement signed by the state’s Chairman, Augustine Nnamani, titled ‘Enugu PDP Press Statement on APC’s false Allegation’ said that ‘contrary to the allegation, it was the APC that has been destroying PDP billboards in the state despite the fact that an advocacy group, Youth Coalition for Good Governance, had recently raised the alarm in the media over such plans by members of the major opposition political party in the state – “to destroy all billboards erected in strategic locations in Enugu by teaming supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led state government”. The party further said that the allegation by the factional state chairman of the APC, Mr. Ben Nwoye that the PDP is stopping the party from mounting its billboards in the state and destroying available ones was unfounded. The PDP statement reads thus ‘the attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has been drawn to the unfounded allegation by the factional state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Ben Nwoye that the PDP is stopping the party from mounting its billboards in the state and destroying available ones. Ordinarily, the state chapter of the PDP would have wished not to join issues with the opposition APC in the state, over series of mischievous allegations against our great party, but since this recent accusation is capable of undermining[…]
